1. Forgetting about the goal or objective
When you are in the middle of working on something (especially if it is a complex or exciting project), you tend to stop thinking about the overarching objectives (or "the why") of what you're doing; specifically, the goals of the product or company. Even worse, sometimes you haven’t actually set those goals and have no North Star or even general direction for the company or product. This can lead to doing a whole lot of useless, and sometimes counterproductive, work. So, as the product manager, it is your responsibility to always ask "why" and ensure your and your team's efforts are aligned on the right goals.
2. Trying to understand *everything*
The reality is that you as the product manager do not need to understand "everything" in explicit detail in order to move the product forward or make meaningful decisions. In fact, if you wait until this magical moment in time when you have a complete understanding of what’s happening in your industry, product space or ecosystem, it may actually be too late to take any meaningful actions to position your company for success. So don't wait for that perfect moment; instead, learn constantly, and build at all times.
3. Not knowing your product
The inverse of the point above is when a PM forgets to actually *use* the product themselves and has a very poor understanding of how the product actually works, or the specifics of some process that they are trying to improve or optimize.
4. Focusing on favorite activities
Another common mistake is for the product manager to zone in on their favorite aspect of product management, their favorite activity. It could be UX, or data analysis, or interviewing and working with users, or writing specs, or any one of the myriad of other things that product managers are responsible for. As a result, some other aspects of the product manager's role which may be as important or even more important may become neglected. So try to keep your interests in mind and either delegate the work or balance your own efforts to include all the necessary pieces.
5. Not maintaining the product roadmap
The product roadmap (both the short and long term) tends to be in a constant state of flux. Sometimes, changes in other orgs or departments require changing your product's roadmap. Other times, changes in the industry or client preferences could influence the planned work. Because of this, a roadmap which does not get updated frequently may start to cause misunderstandings and inconsistencies within the team and organization. There should be one place where everyone internally can go and see the important goals and plans for your product -- make sure to keep that roadmap updated.
6. Being inflexible
If you are not open to new ideas, new viewpoints, you may not be able to make the right decisions to ensure the long-term success of your project or roadmap. Explain your reasons why, be collaborative and make sure you are receptive to suggestions.
7. Not engaging with customers enough
Make sure you always understand what your customers’ problems are and how and why they use your product to solve their problems.
8. Leading by authority
Don’t force each decision through!
