Through the Operation Phakisa Oceans Economy initiative, there are currently have 36 aquaculture projects and an additional 13 projects awaiting approval. These projects are supporting rural economic development in both coastal and inland communities. By the end of 2016, a total investment committed to Operation Phakisa Aquaculture Projects was R690 million, of which government committed R227 million.
