We took a trip to Point Pelee National Park for the spring migration. We are new to birding and as beginners we learned that Point Pelee in the spring is probably the place to be.
For those who don't know, the Tip, is the southernmost point in Canada. It boasts the same temperature as southern California and for migratory birds, this is the first piece of land they see when crossing Lake Erie. Once at the visitor center the park provides a trolley out to the tip every 10 minutes or so. Although you can choose to walk, it is about a two-kilometer hike and the number of birds is eye-opening.
Point Pelee National Park camping is done in yurts at Camp Henry. We did not use it, we stayed at a hotel at first and visited Hillman Marsh while in the area as well. We will always visit these parks whenever we are in Windsor Essex, Ontario. Tourism Windsor Essex does a great job promoting these parks and conservation areas for us all to use. We also did not make it out to Pelee Island but will adventure out there at one point for some great birding opportunities. We got to see a Bonaparte's Gull and many warblers but didn't get to see the Prothonotary Warbler. We will be here each spring to see the Warblers come in from migration.
We did get to walk the Delaurier homestead trail which was really interesting.
This is a time lapse of our drive from Niagara to Point Pelee National Park. As we enter the park the images slow down to give a slightly better view. At the end we were sure to buy ourselves an annual pass.
