Book of the week - The Royal Game by Stefan Zweig
The Royal Game is a short story by Stefan Zweig. Zweig was a Jewish Austrian author who fled Europe before the war and later died by suicide alongside his wife in Brazil.
The Royal Game is a story about two chess players who meet each other on a boat on their way to the “New World.” One was a world-renowned champion, and the other learned chess as a prisoner who only had access to one chess book while in prison. He consequently learned all chess moves by heart and became an excellent speedy player.
The reason I like this book is because it is smart and showcases what makes a Champion a Champion, and how to understand your opponent’s weaknesses and strengths and use them to your advantage.
Great book, super short and easy to read.
