Tissue expanders are used in breast reconstruction surgery, a procedure typically performed after a mastectomy (the surgical removal of the breast) due to breast cancer or other medical reasons. The primary purpose of tissue expanders is to create space and gradually stretch the surrounding tissues in order to accommodate a breast implant for reconstruction.
Over time, usually a few weeks after the initial placement, the expander is gradually filled with sterile saline solution through a valve or port located on the expander's surface. This process occurs during a series of outpatient appointments, allowing the tissue to stretch slowly and create a pocket for the eventual breast implant.
In the United States, the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) mandates that health insurance plans that cover mastectomies must also provide coverage for breast reconstruction and related procedures.
Additionally, New Jersey law ensures that patients can select their healthcare providers, including the surgeon who performs mastectomy and reconstruction.
Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment are highly individualized and together we’ll find the best option for you.
