Dr. Svetlana Stephenson (London Metropolitan University, UK): Joining the Old Guard: Young People and Patrimonial Networks in Russia
In my talk I will discuss neo-patrimonial social organisation and clientilistic structures in Russia, and their impact on the career strategies of young people. Using my own research with members of youth territorial groups and gangs, and secondary data, I will describe how young people aspiring to social and economic success seek to join overlapping formal, informal and illicit networks of patronage and dependence.
