What should you know about the Brazilian wandering spider, the world's deadliest, after it was recently found in a bunch of bananas in south London? Guinness World Records in 2010 named it as the world's most venomous spider. Its bite is apparently thirty times more deadly than that of the rattlesnake. Its scientific name is Phoneutria, the Greek for murderess. It gets its name from its habit of wandering across the jungle floor at night, while other spiders are in their lairs or on their webs. It is sometimes called the banana spider as it likes to hide in the plants during the day. They very rarely reach Britain, from their natural habitat in tropical Central and Southern America.
