The right to own, and Quietly Enjoy Property is one of the basic principles our country was built on. But in order to differentiate your property from other properties, there must be boundaries, and someone has to maintain that record into perpetuity. That's where your County Surveyor comes in with the key duty of protecting and maintaining the original Public Lands Survey System.
The public lands survey system originated in 1785 when Thomas Jefferson was successful in getting some legislation passed through congress which established what we now know as the Public Lands Survey System, which essentially setup townships, ranges and sections. A township is a 6 mile by 6 mile grid creating 36 square miles. Each of those square miles within that township is then called a section. The sections are the basis for land title and taxation in the United States.
The Public Lands Survey System is not only the basis for the establishment and protection of property rights but it is also the foundation for a County's ability to assess and collect property taxes that fund most county services.
