A superior example of a Bohemian garnet brooch from the mid-Victorian period. Handmade from 11 separate tiered sections, it catches the light and glows brightly.
Some garnet pieces can appear a little dull, but not this beauty. It is very finely set in "garnet gold" – about four-carat gold.
Garnets were extremely popular in the 19th century and were worn by women of all classes. So it's to be expected that the quality of jewels like these varies enormously. And they were set in all manner of metals, from brass to silver, silver gilt, and gold.
There is a hook on the back, so it could also be worn as a pendant.
