NO WAY OUT! The 2025 BMW i4 M50: A Thrilling Sport Sedan for the Electric Era
BMW continues to prove that it knows exactly what it's doing in the electric vehicle (EV) era, and the 2025 BMW i4 M50 is solid proof of that. In a world where we talk a lot about climate change, energy efficiency, infrastructure, manufacturing, and battery supply chains, it's refreshing to step back and focus on an electric car that simply kicks some serious butt. Enter the BMW i4 M50: a car that embodies everything BMW has mastered over decades, now translated into the electrified world.
What Is the BMW i4 M50?
The official name might be the BMW i4 Gran Coupe, but make no mistake, this is essentially an all-electric version of the iconic 3 Series. Sure, it has a hatchback body and minor dimension tweaks, but at its core, it's a sports sedan that remains true to the BMW legacy. Built on the same Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform as the 3 Series and many of BMW’s gasoline and hybrid vehicles, the i4 seamlessly integrates its battery system without compromising its sportiness.
This is particularly important, as it shows that not every great EV has to be built on an EV-specific platform. While BMW has its Neue Klasse platform in the pipeline, the i4 proves that the company can excel in the electrified era with its current architecture. And that’s impressive.
The i4 comes in three different versions: the i4 eDrive40, which packs 335 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and up to 318 miles of range; the dual-motor i4 xDrive40, offering 396 horsepower and up to 287 miles of range; and the top-tier i4 M50 with a jaw-dropping 536 horsepower and all-wheel drive. There's also an entry-level i4 eDrive35 coming soon, though pricing and specs haven’t been announced yet.
The i4 M50 is fitted with an 81-kWh battery, and depending on your wheel choice, range varies. For example, with 20-inch wheels, the range is estimated at 245 miles on a full charge—significantly better than the 227 miles estimated by the EPA. However, this is the high-performance variant, so the real charm is in its acceleration: it goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, making it a worthy competitor even to the gas-powered BMW M3.
What’s Great About It?
Let's talk performance. The i4 M50 is an absolute blast to drive. It’s insanely quick, handles exceptionally well, and provides more steering feedback than most EVs out there. The 536 horsepower is addictive, especially in Sport Mode, where the full power is unleashed, giving you a taste of what the future of electric sports sedans looks like.
But more than just raw speed, this is a balanced, well-rounded vehicle. The lower center of gravity, thanks to the floor-mounted battery, enhances the driving dynamics, making the car feel nimble and engaging despite its 5,000-pound curb weight. In fact, it never feels as heavy as it is, defying the typical bulkiness you might expect from an EV of this size.
For those moments when you’re not tearing up the back roads, Comfort Mode offers a refined driving experience. It’s smooth, practical, and retains the DNA of a true BMW, blending the excitement of a sports car with the everyday comfort of a sedan. It’s versatile in the way BMW drivers have come to expect, making it an ideal daily driver as well.
The tech features in the i4 M50 are also top-notch. BMW’s voice-based controls are intuitive, the panoramic screen is a joy to interact with, and the route-planning features, including charger location services, are reliable. And while its maximum DC fast-charging speed of 205 kW isn’t groundbreaking by today’s standards, it’s competitive. In real-world testing, the i4 M50 charged from 35% to 80% in just 27 minutes at a Tesla Supercharger Magic Dock station, which translates to about 100 miles of range—perfect for quick errands or a lunch break on a road trip.
