Thanks for those who took part in my "name the door operator" competition, the prize is....uhmmm, prize??
It is of course an "Otis 7300" - thanks londonkilla and someone else who named the exact model. The noise is a dead giveaway, but I'd always wondered what the operator looked like (not as I expected).
The ambient sounds of an old lift shaft!
That creeking everytime the car starts and stops is loudest at 4:16 - at this point my camera is very near to where the ropes terminate in the centre of the lift car. The ropes are attached to a metal plate - between this and the lift car frame are springs (you can briefly see it at 5:15 at bottom of screen) which I guess is designed to absorb the rough starting and stopping. Well this is where the creeking is coming from.
The stopping is so sharp that the ceiling panels inside the lift car jump up slightly when the lift is travelling upwards, then it stops.
NO OTIS MECHANICAL SELECTOR on this one, as this has been updated to a magnetic tape reader (2.58 until 4:16) to monitor car position for slow down and stopping positions.
Although this lift does have some DDA compliant buttons, the lift car still retains it's original features, such as the classic black buttons both inside and on the landings. There is an old style LED display of which most digits are not working!
Due to the abrupt stopping and starting the upgrade would not have included a variable speed drive for the motor, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned!
As to the relay controller....not sure. 50/50 change of this being original or modernised.
