Managed to explore today one more silent witness of fading history of Wallpack hidden in the fields Delaware Water Gap; the abandoned summer camp known as the former Walpack Environmental Education Center.

Decades ago the camp had been adapted for use as living quarters and classrooms for groups of students using the recreational area for educational purposes. The center was operated by Easton Board of Education, NJ, but invited students from any area of NJ and PA as well.

Back to the days when the center was at full operation, its doors were open as a mixture of a regular school and summer camp. The curriculum included chores and exercises in communal living combined with the environmental lessons.

The tiny observatory that stays apart in a field was once part of the Walpack Valley Environmental Education Center. Its construction was sponsored by Eatontown Board of Education for Elementary school children. The building is empty now, but the solar panel on the post and some fenced equipment make me think that the facility is used as a weather station.

In the 2003, the school district, that served the property for decades, took decision to cut funding for the summer camp and its property was abandoned.

However, it was great to see that the buildings were never cleared out, never emptied of furniture and stuff. The abandoned school, turned into time capsule, now exists as a vault for unexpected relics. Countless items remain behind, moldering through the seasons and the years in the gloomy rooms.
