Carbon dating has turned out to be a great friend of Young Earth Creationists. The reason for this has to do with the decay processes associated with radiocarbon.
Carbon decays quickly. C-14 has a half-life of 5500 years. If every single atom in the universe was made of carbon, it would all decay in less than a million years. And this is being generous to proponents of an old earth. Since C-14 has such a short half-life, any C-14 should essentially be negligible after even 100,000 years. Why this is all important is because if the rocks and fossils really are billions of years old (as apologists of common descent argue), there should be no carbon left. It should have all decayed away. This is precisely why scientists don't carbon date samples assumed to be millions or billions of years old.
I want to look at one important example. This example is diamonds. And diamonds provide incredible scientific evidence for Young Earth Creation. Firstly, diamonds are claimed to be billions of years old. This means they should have no carbon 14 present in them. Unfortunately for those that believe in an earth that's billions of years old, diamonds have been analyzed and found to have measurable carbon 14. This provides observable evidence against an old earth and for an earth that is young.
Diamonds come from deep within the earth. This means they have not had any contact with the atmosphere. They should not have any radiocarbon present in them. And since they are one of the hardest substances on earth, they would be resistant to contamination. The diamonds that were tested all yielded detectable levels of radiocarbon with much of the radiocarbon giving the same age. This is all repeatable data. And this data strongly refutes the idea that the earth is billions of years old. This simply cannot be the case. Or else we shouldn't be finding measurable amounts of radiocarbon in diamonds that are said to be a billion or more years old.
Many defenders of evolution and an old earth have employed an argument from contamination to counter this amazing evidence for Young Earth Creation. The problem for those who don't want to accept the data for what it clearly indicates, the laboratory applies extremely strict pre-treatment protocols. These protocols involve harsh washings that are repeated in strong acids. These acids will dissolve anything. The samples are hit with multiple treatments that help to ensure that only carbon intrinsic to the sample ends up in the instrument for measurement. This is a weak rescue device that is easily countered. These samples cannot be contaminated. The carbon must be intrinsic to the samples.
There is another rescue device employed by critics of Biblical creation. They argue that there should be other nuclear material down in the earth (where diamonds are) that can recharge the C14. They argue this is why we find detectable (sometimes 10x above the detectable limit!) radiocarbon in diamonds. This rescue device has been addressed. The RATE team (which comprises several PhD scientists) investigated this explanation, and they estimated that you would need 13, 000 times more nuclear material in the nearby rocks to adequately recharge the C14. This argument requires unrealistic amounts of material to act as a sufficient recharging mechanism.
Critics of a Young Earth have failed to account for why radiocarbon is found in samples claimed to be millions and even billions of years old. Again, radiocarbon cannot last even a million years. The evidence is best explained by the Young Earth Creation model.
