In a major decision announced today the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India said that TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps will be banned in India.
According to the notification, this move is aimed at protecting the sovereignty of Indian cyberspace and also ensuring the safety of crores of Indians who use these apps.
The ministry invoked Sec 69A of the IT act to take this decision. Their statement said that several of these apps which are highly downloaded on both the Google Play Store and IOS App Store were stealing sensitive information of users without their knowledge and transferring them to servers based outside India where it would be misused
Considering the current situation with China, the government says this emergency step had to be taken.
Other widely used apps like Shareit, UC Browser, Shein, Helo, Cam Scanner, and Clash of Kings also feature in this list of banned apps.
