STORYLINE:
The United States closed its embassy in Kenya on Friday after the Pentagon issued a terrorism alert to all U.S. interests there.
They also raised the threat level to "high." There are four terrorism warning levels; "high" is the highest of the four.
State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said the US Embassy in Nairobi could remain closed Monday and Tuesday.
Another source says the alert came after U-S intelligence officials got fresh reports suggesting al-Qaida agents in Kenya are going ahead with plans to stage an attack.
Kenya and other countries in the Horn of Africa have been a focus of US counterterrorism efforts for many months.
Both the United States and Britain, along with other European countries, have warned a number of times of possible terrorist attacks in eastern Africa, specifically in Kenya.
There have been several terrorist attacks in Kenya in the past five years including the bombing of the embassy in 1998.
219 people were killed and at least 5,000 Kenyans were injured in the attack which has been blamed on Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network.
The embassy remains the largest in sub-Saharan Africa in terms of personnel and regional operations.
The four-story building is the first US mission to be built from scratch since Congress authorised funds to upgrade diplomatic missions following the 1998 attack.
