We're kicking off a new collection of videos called "Snare Spotlight" where we provide an overview and demo of different drums, starting with some of the staples. We couldn't think of a more fitting drum to kick things off with than the legendary Ludwig Black Beauty.

With it's distinctly recognizable black nickel finish, the Black Beauty is a well known drum, though many drummers aren't actually familiar with what's so special about this snare in particular. When were they first made? What made the second run different? What makes this particular nickel over brass (NOB) shell so special?
