Chinese scientists have started the second phase of a clinical trial of a #vaccine for the new coronavirus in the hardest-hit city of #Wuhan, China's Central Television reported.

As of Monday, 273 out of 500 volunteers have been injected with China's first recombinant vaccine candidate for the virus entering Phase II of a human clinical trial, CCTV said.

The eldest volunteer is 84-year-old Wuhan resident Xiong Zhengxing, who completed the vaccination Monday morning, accompanied by his daughter, according to CCTV.

The vaccine, developed by a research team led by Chen Wei with the Institute of Military Medicine under the Academy of Military Sciences, is constructed by genetic engineering methods and is used to prevent diseases caused by novel coronavirus infections.

The first phase of the vaccine clinical trial focused on its safety, while the second phase weighs more on its efficacy.
