Why do you have to forgive your abuser in order to heal? We know God tells us to… but how does forgiving heal US? Here’s how… as long as you carry this hurt, this anger and bitterness, this sense of injustice inside of you over what happened to you, then you remain within the curse of whatever it was that happened to you. It is like your soul is chained to that offense and until you let that go by forgiving, then your soul cannot move forward. And the longer you stay in this position, chained to that hurt, and all that anger and bitterness, the worse and deeper the wound gets. It’s like an untreated sore that starts to get infected. So in one way, it’s almost like a selfish act because forgiving your abuser is not for their benefit at all. It’s for you! But it’s selfish in the same way that it’s selfish to seek Jesus… because it’s so good for you.

I always want to mention that forgiving someone does not mean that what was done to you is okay. So many people have been terribly abused… they’ve had horrific things done to them. And if that includes you, then forgiving your abuser does not mean that what they did to you is not wrong. It doesn’t excuse their behavior. And believe me, God WILL deal with them somehow, some way. And you may also need to cut them out of your life.
