It’s a prison guard’s worst nightmare: an inmate suddenly has a gun, delivered directly to his cell window or dropped in the yard by a drone that can overcome any high wall or security system.
It’s now common for drugs, tobacco and cellphones to be smuggled into jails with drones – which are also used to send illegal “airfreight” consignments across national frontiers.
In March 2015, criminals attempted to send drugs, screwdrivers, a knife and a mobile phone to inmates at a high-security prison in Bedford, UK. Twice in the space of just one week in January, criminals used a drone in their attempt to deliver drugs, a cellphone and a USB memory stick to a cell window at the Detention Center in Hamburg. In November 2015, four suspects were arrested for flying a hexacopter attempting to smuggle tobacco into Calhoun State Prison, in Morgan, Georgia. According to CBS News, there are also documented attempts of using drones for smuggling into prisons in South Carolina, Brazil, Ireland, Greece, Russia, Switzerland and Australia.
