Let’s learn how to identify Milky Quartz. Milky quartz is a white variety of the mineral quartz, the most common mineral on Earth. Identifying Milky Quartz is fun when you learn how geologists use different properties of the crystal to determine its name. You can learn to identify Milky Quartz mineral samples like a real rockhound using color, crystal shape, streak, luster, density, and location in metamorphic rocks.
Crystals of milky quartz form hexagonal prismatic crystals which look like a 6-sided barrel with a hexagonal pyramid on each end. Quartz is the most common mineral on Earth. Milky quartz has no cleavage and instead has a conchoidal fracture which creates a spiral pattern on the crystal. Milky quartz is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, has a white streak, and a glassy or vitreous luster. Milky quartz is used to make prisms, lenses, gauges, glass, paints, and abrasives. Milky Quartz forms in hydrothermal veins in rocks like pegmatites. The white color is caused by gas bubbles and liquid in the crystal.
Tracy Jones, the professional geologist at Mini Me Geology is ready to show you examples of Milky Quartz minerals and teach you how to identify the minerals in your collection.
