Today we will immerse ourselves in the magical Valle d'Itria, exploring three of its jewels: Alberobello, Locorotondo, and Martina Franca. Get ready to discover trulli, baroque architecture, and culinary delights!
Let's start our journey in Alberobello, famous for its trulli, stone buildings with conical roofs. This town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and as you stroll through its streets, you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Don’t miss the Trullo Sovrano, the largest in Alberobello, which houses historical objects that tell the story of traditional life.
In this area, you absolutely must try the orecchiette with cime di rapa, a typical dish of Puglia. During your stay, don't forget to visit the Museo del Territorio to learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating place.
Next, we head to Locorotondo, an enchanting circular village known for its white houses with domed roofs. Here you can stroll through the historic center, enjoying spectacular views of the Valle d'Itria.
Locorotondo is also famous for its DOC white wine. While visiting, be sure to savor the focaccia di Locorotondo, a delicious focaccia stuffed with cherry tomatoes, olives, and oregano. If you're in the area in August, be sure to participate in the Sagra del Cinghiale, a food festival dedicated to dishes made with wild boar and folkloric events.
Finally, we arrive at Martina Franca, renowned for its Lecce Baroque style. The Basilica of San Martino is a true architectural masterpiece, with an elaborate facade and breathtaking interiors.
Martina Franca also hosts the Festival della Valle d'Itria, held every summer, celebrating opera performances and classical music concerts. Don't forget to taste the typical capocollo and other cold cuts, such as salsiccia di Martina, in one of the local restaurants for a true Puglian culinary experience.
For an authentic Puglian experience, stay or dine in a traditional masseria. Masseria Cervarolo, located between Alberobello and Ostuni, offers fresh organic dishes and comfortable rooms. Alternatively, visit Masseria La Tempesta in Locorotondo, where you can enjoy local specialties in a rustic atmosphere surrounded by nature. These masserie will allow you to discover the true essence of Puglia, amidst beautiful landscapes.
The Valle d'Itria is a magical place, rich in history, culture, and gastronomy. If you visit Alberobello, Locorotondo, and Martina Franca, you will discover the true heart of Puglia.
