If you are able to unlock the bootloader of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, Redmi Note 9S, or Redmi Note 9 Pro, then you should be able to root it with Magisk. I have only personally tested this with the Qualcomm variants (9S and 9 Pro) though as they get more developer community attention than the MediaTek models.

Still, the process should be the same with you downloading the firmware of whatever is currently running on your Xiaomi smartphone. Make sure the MIUI version (numbers) and build (letters) that you download matches the same firmware on your smartphone.
With that done, we can extract the contents, patch the boot.img file (that's the kernel), and then flash it to our smartphone. This will result in us gaining root access to the Redmi Note 9S or Redmi Note 9 Pro.
