BIDEN HISTORIC CHOICES FOR NAT’L SECURITY, FOREIGN POLICY ADVISERS: President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris deliver remarks to formally announce their choices for their six top national security and foreign policy positions. The names of the choices were released yesterday and are regarded as a group of career foreign policy and security experts and with decades of experience. They also fulfill Biden’s promise to establish a diverse group of advisers that ‘looks like America.’
Among the choices are former Deputy Sec. of State during the Obama administration Antony Blinken, who will be nominated for Secretary of State; former Sec. of State John Kerry who will be named to serve as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, a newly created position on the National Security Council; and former Assistant Sec. for the Bureau of African Affairs during the Obama administration Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who will be nominated to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Other historic choices include Alejandro Mayorkas, who would be the first immigrant and Latinx American to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security, and Avril Haines, who would be the first woman to serve as Director of National Intelligence.
