Discover the innovative approach to tackling per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) contamination in landfill leachate. Linc Symons, Site Operations Manager at the Shoal Bay Leachate Treatment Plant in Darwin, Australia, talks about how the plant is using engineered and nature-based solutions to remove a raft of contaminants from leachate. This facility is the first of its kind, employing a patented fully automated foam fractionation process to remove PFAS, without the use of chemical additives, generating only a small, PFAS-enriched waste stream.
The plant incorporates the innovative LEEF System®, engineered by the Water & Carbon Group in collaboration with the City of Darwin. The video explores how the plant combines engineered and nature-based solutions, including biological treatment, a treatment wetland, and phytoremediation with a vetiver grass crop to eliminate a range of contaminants. This zero discharge closed-loop is achieving remarkable results, reducing PFOS and PFOA to the limits of detection.
