Dr. Christine Sinsky, Vice President of Professional Satisfaction for the American Medical Association in Chicago, IL, reviews her article appearing in the November 2023 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where using survey results found that the majority of physicians experienced intrusion of politics into their medical care during the pandemic. Nearly half of this sample of COVID-facing physicians experienced professionally conflicting emotions, including less compassion and empathy, greater frustration, and resentment. These professionally conflicting emotions were more common in those who had had more negative COVID work experiences, such as working longer hours due to COVID, and having stressful conversations about non-approved therapies or mask wearing. Compromised integrity, moral distress and greater exhaustion due to the pandemic were also noted to be associated with less professional fulfillment and greater occupational burnout.
