Indonesia has inaugurated their seventh president, with Joko Widodo being sworn in at a ceremony in Jakarta. Widely known as Jokowi, the 53-year-old’s appointment ends a decade of reign by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and the ceremony marked the first time a directly elected president handed power to another. Mr Widodo used his first speech to push for political unity. He thanked opposition leader and rival Prabowo Subianto, referring to him as a friend. Jokowi will start a five-year term, and will endeavour to meet pledges to improve the living conditions of Indonesia’s 240 million people.
