The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council celebrated its 71st District Council Day during a function which was held at the council premises here on Tuesday.
Speaking at the function, KHADC CEM, Pyniaid Sing Syiem lauded late Rev JJM Nichols Roy, referred to as Father of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
He said that it was the efforts of late Rev Nichols Roy had led to the birth of the district councils. The KHADC CEM also mentioned that he (late Rev Nichols Roy) had played a major role in the inclusion of the Sixth Schedule in the Constitution for the preservation, protection and safeguard of indigenous tribals through creation of district councils.
On the occasion floral tributes were paid at the memorial bust of late Rev Nichols Roy at the premises of the council by KHADC CEM, KHADC chairman, Lamphrang Blah, Deputy CEM, Pynshgnain N. Syiem and District Council Affairs department joint secretary, A. Nikhla.
