BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - The National Guard is in Erie County, where a State of Emergency has been declared and some roadways have turned into parking lots full of abandoned vehicles and stranded motorists.
County Executive Mark Poloncarz says the main arteries in communities like West Seneca, Cheektowaga, Lancaster, Elma and South Buffalo are clogged. Emergency crews can't get past the vehicles in the roadway and ambulances are having trouble reaching neighborhoods down choked streets.
Roads impacted the worst are Union, Transit, Seneca, Harlem, William, Clinton, Losson, Ridge and Walden. Anyone stranded in a vehicle is urged to call 911 and inform dispatchers of their location.
Despite ongoing efforts, motorists remain stranded. The county is advising those motorists to remain with their vehicles. The sheriff's office says the weather is creating life threatening situations and that people are getting hurt just trying to walk to locations. They advise staying out of the elements so crews can do their jobs.
