In spite of setbacks and challenges, Maribel became more than she was made to believe she could be – becoming her own role model and finally, her own hero. Duran tells how to work toward that which we cannot see and for all of us, to look beyond, what we do see to recognize the untapped sources of potential around us.
As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, a teen mom from the south side of Chicago, a college dropout and an abuse survivor, few would expect Maribel Duran to one day work in an influential role in the U.S. Department of Education under the Obama administration.
