Former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn's criminal trial has begun in Germany, nearly a decade after the "dieselgate" scandal. Winterkorn faces up to 10 years in prison for conspiracy to commit fraud, related to around nine million vehicles sold with rigged emissions levels.
The trial, expected to run through September 2025, will also address charges of market manipulation and false testimony. Volkswagen, which has already paid around 30 billion euros in fines and compensation, is monitoring the trial but is not a party to it.
