(1 Dec 2019) At least 14 people died Saturday after Mexican security forces engaged in an hour-long gun battle with an armed criminal group in the town of Villa Unión, in the state of Coahuila, about an hour's drive southwest of Eagle Pass, Texas.
Coahuila state Gov. Miguel Angel Riquelme told local reporters that four of the dead were policemen who were killed in the first standoff, and that several municipal workers were missing.
The armed group reportedly stormed local government offices, prompting state and federal forces to intervene.
The other 10 dead are alleged members of the Cartel of the Northeast, which the governor said had stormed the town of 3,000 residents via a convoy of trucks.
Rapid fire could be heard in videos of the shootout posted on social media, while images showed burned out vehicles and the facade of the municipal office riddled with bullets.
Security forces will remain in the town for several days to restore a sense of calm, the governor said.
The government of Coahuila said in a statement that: "These groups won't be allowed to enter state territory."
