Mexico once a massive country that was larger than the modern-day United States,
experienced a huge territorial loss to the United States in the 1830s.
Today, Mexico ranks as the 13th-largest country by land area, which is smaller than Saudi Arabia. But here is the thing. More than 70% of the country is covered by mountains, making it one of the most mountainous countries in the world, and what even more worse is that the Southern part of Mexico is covered with thick jungle. This makes it difficult and expensive for infrastructure projects like building roads or railways. Mexico shares land borders with the United States, Guatemala, and Belize. But this border in
the south is covered by dense rainforests and jungles which is super impossible for the Mexican Government to patrol the entire border. And, this makes perfect location for smuggling and illegal immigration all the way from the south to northern countries like United States and Canada.
