Phragmites, also known as Common Reed, are plant species of large perennial reed grasses found in wetlands throughout temperate and tropical regions of the world. In Southeast Michigan, this plant is highly invasive, a non-native species that can cause harm. Invasive phragmites creates tall, dense stands which degrade wetlands and coastal areas by crowding out native plants and animals. It can also negatively affect recreation and tourism and reduce home value in affected areas.
