Trump's Hush Money Conviction Still Valid After Re-election, Judge Rules | Firstpost America
US President-elect Donald Trump has lost a bid to overturn his criminal conviction in the historic hush money case. New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan has ruled the conviction is valid, even after Trump’s re-election. This comes as the president-elect’s lawyers argued the case should be dismissed in the wake of a landmark ruling from the US Supreme Court. In July, the apex court ruled that US presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts in office. However, Justice Merchan said evidence suggests Trump’s act of falsifying business records was personal. The conviction stems from Trump’s attempt to hide reimbursements to his former lawyer Michael Cohen in 2016, who paid off adult film star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about a sexual encounter with Trump.
