A very STRANGE and RARELY visited ancient site in Portugal…
Is it significantly older and built for a different purpose we're not told?
Necrópole de São Gens is central Portugal and there’s very little information available about this ancient site
There’s around 20 sepulchres (rock cut tombs) and the boulder behind me is called the Bell Stone which is a natural central point for this ancient site. It looks like a mushroom balancing on the stone. I was drawn to this stone.
The sepulchres are thought to be cut between the first and seventh century AD although I expect there has been human activity here long before this period.
It’s a very atmospheric place, almost like a stone theatre with these rock cut tombs and massive boulders on this beautiful landscape.
Gaia and I were on our own and at one point she was barking and growling at one of the stones. I’ve never heard her growl like that before , she didn’t move past one of the stones for a few minutes so I’m not sure what she sensed.
My feeling being at this site is that it is significantly older and may well have been built for a different purpose…
