AS Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini rejected the criticism surrounding head coach Jose Mourinho's defensive style of management, and instead praised the 'Giallorossi' and their team spirit ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Europa League final against Sevilla.

"To make sacrifices, and to make one more run to help your team-mate is not parking the bus", Pellegrini said at a news conference at Budapest's Puskas Arena on the eve of the final. "It just means how much we wanted to be here today."

"Parking the bus" is an expression used to describe Mourinho's often ultra-defensive systems.

Roma came to Budapest having advanced to the final with a 0-0 draw in the second leg at Bayer Leverkusen, and they managed just one goal attempt compared to 23 for the Germans.

Mourinho has a perfect 5-0 win-loss career record in finals of the three major European club competitions, which dates back to 2003 and Porto’s UEFA Cup triumph.

The AS Roma head coach can make more history by becoming the first manager to win the Europa League with three different clubs, with Roma potentially joining his FC Porto and Manchester United teams.

And this coming just one year after the latest team in his storied career won the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League to make Mourinho the first boss with titles in each of the three European club competitions.
