Parts of the Pacific Crest Trail and the john Muir Trail require that hikers carry a bear resistant food canister by law. There are huge fines for not complying. However, not only can you go more lightweight by carrying a smaller canister, but you can use a smaller pack in lieu of a monster backpack to stuff your BearVault inside.
