Wishing everyone a Happy World Anglo-Indian Day. May all of you be blessed always to continue to enjoy our wonderful cuisine. In my own small way, I try to keep the culture of the community alive through its culinary delights .
Just a small explanation as to why its known as World Anglo-Indian Day for those who are not aware of its origins. The word ‘ANGLO-INDIAN’ first found mention in the Government of India Act 1935 (26 GEO V & I Edw VIII Ch.2) dated 2nd August 1935 which formally recognized Anglo-Indians as a Minority Community in India. The key points of the 1935 Act were retained and in the Constitution of India 1950, Anglo-Indians were listed as an official minority group in India’s Constitution. Article 366(2) of the Act defines an Anglo-Indian “as a person whose progenitors in the male line is or was of European descent but who is domiciled within the territory of India and is or was born within such territory of parents habitually residing therein and not established there for temporary purposed only”.
Since the word ‘ANGLO-INDIAN’ first found official mention in the Act of 1935 on 2nd August 1935, it was decided at the First World Anglo-Indian Reunion to commemorate the mention by celebrating the day 2nd August worldwide by the Community as World Anglo-Indian Day.
