Initially, Venkayya Garu designed a flag with red and green horizontal stripes. Later, Mahatma Gandhi suggested adding a white stripe and the Charkha (spinning wheel) in the center, leading to the design that inspired the current Indian flag.
Beyond his contributions to the flag, Pingali Venkayya was a remarkable social worker known as Japan Venkayya, Diamond Venkayya, and Patti Venkayya. He taught history at various colleges and trained students in yoga, agriculture, horse riding, and NCC. Even at the age of 82, he served in the Ministry of Mines.
Despite his immense contributions, his final wish—to see the national flag hoisted on the Red Fort during the independence movement—remained unfulfilled due to his poor financial state and societal neglect. The Andhra Pradesh government nominated him for the Bharat Ratna, but he never received the honor.
