The rocky island between Lake Geneva and steep mountain slopes has been inhabited since prehistoric times. For hundreds of years, the movement of ships on Lake Geneva and the most important route to the St. Bernard Pass were controlled from this island. Chillon belonged to the Counts of Savoy from the 12th to the 16th centuries, until the inhabitants of Bern recaptured this fortress on the water, and then it was taken over by the inhabitants of the canton of Vaud.
The castle can be rented for various events. From the castle you can go to Montreux (by river, by water or on foot), where you can admire the many kilometers of embankment with secluded bays, promenades bordered by flowers, exotic plants and palm trees.
Over 400,000 people visit Chillon every year. They see 14th-century painted walls, underground vaults, state rooms and bedrooms (which have survived in their original form) dating back to the reign of Bern. The entire complex consists of 25 buildings and three courtyards protected by two circumferential walls.
