► Pregnant women have long been advised to take folic acid, the vitamin known to help prevent potentially fatal birth defects, such as spina bifida.
But now the government wants manufacturers to add it to flour. It claims putting it in products like bread, cakes and biscuits could help cut the number of birth defects by a fifth.
