Two weeks before he killed himself, Dr. Fredric Brandt distraughtly texted his colleague when he realized he was the butt of a joke on Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” The dermatologist to the stars couldn't comprehend how the media could cruelly point out his likeness to the satirical character Dr. Grant — a overly tanned, platinum blond doctor whose face is pumped with so much Botox, he pronounces his own name ad “Dr. Franff," played by Martin Short. Vanity Fair writer Lili Anolik , whose husband Rob worked under the doctor said Brandt texted Rob right after reading about the caricature in a troubled tabloid. “Did u see page 6 I’m so upset I’m a freak,” the Brandt wrote in late March. Two weeks later the 65-year-old hanged himself inside his Miami mansion. The media quickly speculated that the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” parody's timing, which premiered on Netflix just one month before Brandt’s death, may have contributed to his suicide.
