Munich Victims Are Honored For The First Time At The Olympics' Opening Ceremony
For the first time in nearly half a century, the victims of the terror attack at the Munich Olympics were commemorated during Tokyo's opening ceremony.
The 11 Israeli athletes killed by Palestinian gunmen in 1972 were remembered with a moment of silence.
Families of the victims had been pleading with Olympic organizers for years to include them in the opening ceremony, but their demands were consistently denied.
Two of the victims' widows commented, "Finally, there is justice."
"We struggled for 49 years and never gave up," said Ankie Spitzer and Ilana Romano, who attended the ceremony on Friday.
One of the saddest chapters in Olympic history is the murder in Munich on September5, 1972.
