Making molasses at home involves caramelizing sugar and combining it with water. Here's a simple recipe to create a molasses-like syrup that can be used in gingerbread cookies, cinnamon rolls, toffee pudding, and many more:
Ingredients:
- Brown sugar - 200g (granulated or brown sugar)
- Water - 60ml
- Lemon juice - 2 tbsp
Instructions:
• In a saucepan, mix the brown sugar and water and add the lemon juice or vinegar and stir well. This helps prevent crystallization.
• Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until the sugar dissolves.
• Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low.
• Let the mixture simmer for 3-4 minutes (may take longer if you are making a bigger batch), stirring occasionally, until it thickens and reaches a syrupy consistency.
• Keep an eye on it to prevent burning.
• Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the syrup to cool completely. It will thicken further as it cools.
• Transfer the cooled molasses into an airtight jar and store it in a cool dark place where it will stay fresh for 2 weeks, or you can store it in refrigerator for around 1-2 months
