삼성, LG전자 1분기 실적
Samsung and LG Electronics both posted strong earnings for Q1.
Thanks in no small part to soaring sales of smartphones and home appliances.
Oh Soo-young looks beyond the uplifting digits.
Samsung Electronics has posted its largest quarterly profit since 2013,... backed by record semiconductor sales.
The Korean tech giant's operating profit rose to eight-point-seven billion U.S. dollars,... up almost 50 percent on-year.
Sales came to some 44-point-six billion U.S. dollars.
A surge in chip sales accounted for more than two-thirds of the company's profit,... hitting a record-breaking five-point-six billion dollars.
With the global appetite for high-capacity chips forecast to grow this year, accompanied by a steady hike in prices,... the company expects its strong profits to continue into the second quarter.
"Samsung also expects to see more orders of OLED panels as well as a seasonal increase in demand for home appliances such as air conditioners. And sales of the Galaxy S8 will be fully reflected in the second quarter earnings- so it's likely that profits will be higher than the first quarter."
Local competitor LG electronics has also posted strong earnings for the first quarter,... after its dip into the red at the end of last year.
The company is now back in the black with an operating profit of 815-million dollars,... a leap of 82 percent on-year.
Overall sales recorded twelve-point-nine-seven billion dollars.
Steady sales of TVs and premium home appliances largely boosted performance as well as improvements made in the ailing mobile division.
"Due to the intensive structural reforms made in the fourth quarter of last year, LG's mobile division was able to lower costs and its break-even point. Its sales of mid-to-lower end handsets to the North American market increased and, on top of that, the early release of the G6 smartphone was reflected at least partially, raising LG's profit line."
Seasonal demand for auto parts and home appliances is expected to push up sales in the coming months.
But with the mobile division still in the red,... and marketing costs for the G6 expected to take its toll,... experts say the company may not enjoy such a hefty margin in the remaining quarters of this year.
