If you're looking for a compressor for your plasma cutter you will need to find a compressor that has about 1.5x the CFM rating of your plasma cutter. For example is your plasma cutter states in the manual that it requires 4 CFM to operate, then you should be looking for a compressor with roughly a 6 CFM rating.

Purchasing the correct sized compressor for your plasma cutter will allow you to make continuous cuts without any interruptions from "low pressure warnings" from your machine. It will also reduce the premature wear that can occur on compressors when they are pushed past their recommended duty cycles by continuously being over worked. If your compressor is constantly running to try and keep up with your air supply needs they can become heat soaked and fail prematurely.

It's easy for me to say buy the biggest and best compressor, but the truth is sometimes not everyone can afford a big compressor or sometimes they simply do not have the space in their shop. If that is the case you can instead purchase a smaller 20-30 gallons compressor and be sure to keep an eye on the compressor usage. When making smaller cuts often times a 20-30 gallon compressor will be enough to get the job done.
