Cherwell Thy Wyne (meaning show your joy) is a new CD written and arranged for the dances from John Banys' notebook, a manuscript dated c.1500 and found in the Gresley family papers held at Derbyshire Record Office. This manuscript is a unique source of fifteenth-century English dances which would have been performed in an upper-class household. There are 26 dance choreographies given but only 8 matching melodies and 5 other pieces of music, therefore tunes have been composed in a similar style for the other dances.
An instruction book on how to perform all these dances has been written by Ann and Paul Kent. It bears the same title as the CD and may be obtained from the Dolmetsch Historical Dance Society through its website: www.dhds.org.uk
The arrangements of the dance tunes on this CD are available for free download as printable PDF files from The York Waits' website: www.theyorkwaits.org.uk
The CD can be purchased from either of the above websites.
