Today we commemorate the 39th death anniversary of Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr.

Aquino was one of the prominent figures who opposed the Marcos regime. After years of exile in the United States, he decided to come back to the Philippines to lead the opposition but he was assassinated upon arrival at the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983. His death sparked the 1986 People Power Revolution that restored democracy in the country.
