After multiple years of prolonged campaigns, guerilla warfare and internal conflict and intrigues, Metellus had to step down as Gaius Marius was elected Roman consul and commander against Numidian King Jugurtha. Despite continuing with the same military tactics as his predecessor, both Marius and Jugurtha understood the war was coming to an end. It had been going on for too long.
In 106 BC, towards the end of the Roman campaign, Jugurtha decided to launch a large ambush. Supported by his ally, Mauretanian King Bocchus I, an army that dwarfed the Romans surprised the Romans close by the former Numidian capital, Cirta.
