Shrimp Tanks Vs Shrimp Jars - Whats The Best Option For A Beginner Cherry Shrimp Setup?
#### My Current Setup
I have 5 dedicated shrimp tanks and 2 shrimp jars. The shrimp tank and shrimp jar featured in this video are new and still cycling, so they don’t have any shrimp in them yet.
#### Initial Costs
Starting with initial costs, there are several variables. In the USA, you can get a 5.5-gallon tank for $24.99 or a 10-gallon tank for $29.99, with prices halved during the PetCo half-off Aqueon sale. In Europe, the Diversa or Aquatown ranges offer a 25-liter (6.6 US gallons) tank for around £30.
Jar prices vary widely, starting at about $10 and going up to $30. I use 6.5-liter Biscotti jars (around 1.7 US gallons), which cost between £13 and £20. You can also repurpose old pickle jars if available, though they can be hard to find.
For lighting, I use a Seaoura light on my shrimp tanks ($19 or £16.50), and the Hygger HG033 USB light for my shrimp jars ($19 or £16). The Hygger light has a higher output and a built-in timer, making it very convenient.
#### Filtration
Natural filtration with the Walstad method works well for both shrimp tanks and jars, using plants for natural water purification. I use this method in all my shrimp jars and two of my tanks. I have a dedicated video on setting up a Walstad shrimp tank and jar, which I'll link in the description.
For my orange and yellow Neocaridina tanks, I use cheap sponge filters ($5 each) powered by USB air pumps ($10). Neocaridina shrimp can usually live at room temperature, so I don’t use heaters, reducing costs further.
Overall, shrimp tanks typically cost more than jars but offer much more space for your money, so I’m giving the win to shrimp tanks for this section.
#### Shrimp Types
Neocaridina shrimp are a perfect option, available in various colors including red, yellow, orange, white, black, green, blue, and various rili patterns. All my setups currently contain Neocaridina shrimp, and I highly recommend them.
Amano shrimp can also be kept in tanks and jars, though their appearance may not be as appealing. I don’t have experience with ghost shrimp, but they can be kept in both setups as well. Generally, jars are better for Neocaridina, while tanks can accommodate most shrimp types.
#### Colony Size
Colony size depends on the species, tank setup, and feeding schedule. Shrimp have a low bioload, allowing large colonies in relatively small tanks. In my 25-liter tank, I have around 80 cherry shrimp, while my shrimp jar holds about 20 yellow Neos.
#### Water Stability
Water stability is easier to maintain in a shrimp tank due to the larger volume and the ability to include a filter. I recommend using fast-growing stem plants and floating plants for optimal stability. While shrimp jars can maintain stable conditions, tanks are generally easier to manage.
#### Breeding
For breeding, Neocaridina shrimp, especially cherry shrimp, are the easiest and breed true, meaning their offspring retain their colors. Other varieties, like Green Jades, may require more line maintenance. If you’re new to shrimp keeping, start with red cherry shrimp.
#### Feeding
Feeding strategies vary. I feed my larger colonies daily and smaller ones three times a week. Some people feed their shrimp less frequently or rely on natural algae and biofilm. Live plants can balance higher food loads, so both tanks and jars can handle daily feeding.
#### Space Requirements
Shrimp jars are ideal for limited space, fitting easily into small apartments, dorms, or barracks. Tanks, while larger, offer more grazing space for shrimp, making them preferable if you have the room.
#### Maintenance
Maintenance can be as involved as you like. Tanks offer more space for plant growth and easier maintenance compared to jars, which can be tricky to trim and clean.
